Totoro Quilt

Totoro Quilt

More baby quilts! I need the people around me to stop having babies for a bit so I can take a break from making baby quilts! =) In all seriousness though, the last 2 quilts were for some of my closest girlfriends, and Mi and I had so much fun making them.

First up was a quilt for Lorelai. Last year, we dressed up all our babies in Totoro costumes so it seemed appropriate to gift her new baby with a quilt in the same theme.

We used fabrics from Michael Miller’s Pitter Patter and did a 9-patch block layout. I took screencaps of all the prints, mocked up the blocks we planned to make in Photoshop, and printed them out. Then Mi and I spread them out over the dining room table and agonized over the block layout. We were on round 5 or 6 of trying to randomize the block layout when Marcus got fed up watching us and stepped in. He was convinced there was a scientific, logical way to lay out the blocks even with all our constraints. It looked quite good when he was done! (We gave him credit on the quilt label.)

We chose a wavy stitch to quilt it to give it a rainy feel. I printed out 2 different images of Totoro and combined them because we thought he would look cuter holding a leaf than an umbrella. Then we used fleece to make the Totoro appliqué and put him on the quilt.

We got a flannel cloud print for the backing and pieced leftover fabric to make the binding which looked super cute.

I love how this quilt came out and now I want a Totoro quilt for myself!

And one last photo of Bobo being cute and in the way while I was quilting.
